RR Nationals 180km. Urban circuit in Edmonton Alberta

7th u23

The circuit had 3 climbs on it with the rest on a windy course which was very favorable to aggressive racing and spectators.

The finish line was on a flat part of the course in a park.

I was aggressive from the gun and tried to make the early break. After a few attempts the move slowly rolled off the front with 2 Spidertech riders in it and a handful of others including some u23 riders. It is to be noted that the race combines u23 riders, elites and pros all racing at the same time but for distinct jerseys. That’s just the way we do it back in Canada. I then try and make it across with Will Routley of Jelly Belly but he drops me when we are 10 seconds to the break. I then decide to keep on rolling strong in chase in the hope that another group comes back onto me. Finally a favorite comes across solo David Veilleux of Kelly. We were a good duo and knew that nothing much could withstand us. I did not know that it would take us 1 hour of chasing to get across. A very painful and well calculated hour permitted us to make it across. After closing the gap, the attacks started again with 30km. ended up in a group sprinting for 5th. After a very valiant effort, I got 7th u23 in a sprint of the main break. I got chopped by a rider in the sprint, but unfortunately did not have the legs to make up for it. Definitely a ride that turned the head of some National team managers. Will Routley takes his first national jersey!

Crit. Nationals in Delta BC

2nd u23

A very dangerous break goes early with David Veilleux of Kelly and Svein tuft of Garmin. They maintained a solid gap and I wait in 10th wheel back in the peloton and united and Orbea try to bring things back together. With these 2 strong rollers up front and the rest of the kelly team shutting it down, Veilleux gets the win. I tried to make it across a couple times but the speed of the course made it nearly impossible to go across gaps solo. I ended up pack sprinting and avoiding the crashes to get 2nd u23 in the pack sprint. This race was part of the Tour de Delta.

I felt pretty good and I was super motivated with this being my last crack at a U23 nationals event.  I was one of the first people to go down the start ramp which I believe was to my advantage.  I didn't have a whole lot of fast riders around me in the start order and therefore no one was able to catch me, instead I caught a whole string of riders just on the way out to the turnaround.  Alex Howes (reigning criterium and road u23 national champion) was my 1 minute man and after the turnaround I keyed off of him to judge the rest of my time trial.  I rested as much as I could on the downhill stretch after the turnaround and I hammered it as hard as possible on the climbs on the last loop of the course.  I almost caught Howes on one of the last rollers of the loop coming in to the finish.  I knew I had posted a good time but I was disappointed when they held everyone around for a few minutes after my finish telling us they needed to keep the top 3 on the standings.  I was sure I was going to be a part of this at least for a short while, but they called out 3 numbers mine wasn't one of them.  I rolled back to the car in confusion and disbelief that Howes could have beaten me.  (He was one of the numbers that was chosen to stick around.)  Anyways, I didn't think about it much longer until later that afternoon when I saw the results.  I was 5th! and I had 5 minutes drive back down for the podium awards ceremony!

This is one of the most looked forward to crit of the season for most riders under the age of 23. The course in the center of downtown Bend is a perfect one, dead flat and four corners. I had raced the race last year as a Junior and placed fourth just behind a break away of three. And with that result I had a call up this year. The gun shot rang out and the hundred and fifty U-23's were off. Now the field in this category is an interesting one, it is comprised of teams and many individuals, some of them pros. We had fifty six laps to complete of the 1.3 mile course. It is a four corner right hand crit and it had a head wind on the finish straight which meant opening up the sprint too early would guarantee someone getting a run on you.

The race was relatively fast and active. The Garmin team was not riding aggressive. Some of the guys were active but they weren't committed to a break. Livestrong on the other hand was hitting it off the front left and right. It just so happened that this paid off at ten to go with Ben King (Livestrong) another rider rode away and had thirty seconds. I was surprised that Garmin was not riding. At five to go Alister came up to me and brought me up to the front of the race and not only that but took me to second wheel. And he started riding the lead out at three to go. He sadly he had no help from any other teams. If I could have given him a pull without ruining my sprint I would have. He rode it down to one to go. On the back straight Nate Brown (Livestrong) went. On the last straight I was on Nate's wheel and he sat up. That’s when Justin Williams hit it and he had two guys on his wheel and I started my sprint closing the gap to the three in front of my and then hit it again passed the two on Justins wheel and barely didn't get by the Justin. We came very close to catching the break of two. If anyone gave Alister a pull we WOULD have caught the break. But we didn't and I end up fourth.
